Lectures on tragic poetry, especially as illustrated by the four great dramas of Shakspere, ca. 1842, 1855.

Bound volume containing the manuscript, in the hand of Henry Reed, of four lectures he gave at the Athenian Institute, Philadelphia, in 1842, on tragic poetry, as illustrated in Shakespeare's King Lear, Macbeth, Hamlet and Othello, with one lecture devoted to each play. The lectures took place on the 6th, 13th, 20th, and 27th of December, respectively. Each lecture has its own title page, in Reed's hand. The lectures were published in their entirety after Reed's death, under the editorship of his brother William B. Reed, in: Lectures on English history and tragic poetry, as illustrated by Shakespeare (Philadelphia: Parry & McMillan, 1855), p. 345-466. The manuscript contains notes in the hand of William Reed, comprising his editor's notes for the publication. In two instances notes on separate leaves are tipped in. Some emendations within the text evidently comprise editing on the part of William Reed.
